Oh What Fun! Evie’s Turning One!

by Friday, August 1, 2014
First birthdays are the best. A celebration of so many things, and probably the most important is that you survived! One year down; many, many more to go.
Last monthly balloon picture – 12 down!

We love big 1st birthday and yes, I know, they are really for us and not for her. But, any excuse to celebrate works at this house. I wanted something girly but modern so I mimics the colors and style of Evie’s room – gold and pink everywhere.

The invitations came from a sweet little etsy shop – I love how quickly you can have custom invitations and they shoot them over to kinkos for a same day print job.

Evie’s first birthday invitation

I always try to strike a balance between kid and adult friendly food (and made ahead so I’m not spending time in the kitchen instead of enjoying the party!). The menu included mixed fruit cups, veggies and ranch, mini ham and provolone sandwiches, PB&J, spinach and strawberry salad cups, chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, and macaroons (from Trader Joe’s – not quite ready to tackle making those from scratch!).

I love cute cookie bags as party favors, but they can get expensive. And now, I know why! This year I was determined to master the perfect sugar cookie. I was quite intimidated by royal icing but I’m getting the hang of it. I think I have the basics down but I don’t think I have the time of patients to ever go all out. The level of detail in some of those cookies, is amazing! I made a test batch a week or so before and they turned out great. Of course when I was ready to do the real thing, I couldn’t find the cookie cutter I used so I had to go with plan B. But it all worked out and the cookies were soft & yummy.

So many people commented on the smash cake and honestly, it was the easiest thing to make. Two cupcakes, some left over icing, a piping bag and #2 tip and you have a very cute, but super forgiving little cake.

A big thank you to Carrie Smith Photography for helping to capture all these special moments.
